4GOSPELS:

Okay I though this weeks SCG lesson was rather interesting so I posting this so that it might enlighten some of you who do not attend that class.
The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are known as "synoptic" gospels, meaning "with the same eye". However you would be able to spot various differences if you read them, that is because the different books have different purposes to fulfill. However The book of John is not included in the synoptic Gospels as there is a different emphasis and slant in this Gospel.

The Gospel of Matthew:

The general purpose of this book is to show who Christ is in order to encourage people to make an intelligent decision for Christ.
If you notice in your Bible, there are many sections that are highlighted in red compared to the other 3 Gospels. This is also because the book of Matthew was like a teaching manual for the churches. There were many long sermons recorded such as:

(1) Sermon on the mount (5:1 - 7:29)
(2) Disciples on the mission to Israel (9:35- 11:1)
(3) Parables of the kingdom (13:1- 52)
(4) Discipleship and relationships (18:1- 35)
(5) Eschatology* (24:1- 26:1)

It also sets forth pastoral concerns for:

(1) Affirming the humble (Mt 18: 3-4)
(2) Warning against stumbling others (Mt 18:6-9)
(3) Encouragement to restore/maintain relationship (Mt 18:15-21)

The Gospel of Mark:

John Mark, the author of this book could have been a young man who was serving and following Jesus after his arrest.

The purpose of this Gospel is slightly different, although the main purpose of the Gospels are similar. All Gospels show that Christ is the Son of Man, which meant that he was 100% human during his stay on earth. Other than that it explains the rejection of Christ as due to the hardness of heart. And Mark was probably encouraging the Roman Church suffering persecution at that time.

The Gospel of Luke:

His purpose was to affirm the things that happened/ fulfilled around us, like the events of Christ coming to Earth. And also rewrite events in an orderly manner.

-

Remember all these 3 Gospels have many events, and miracles demonstrated by Christ. And they all have more similarities because of the tradition, background of information provided/available, they had a common subject of writing and all were from a common inspiration of God.

Differences in the Gospels could be due to varying applications in Christ's teaching to local needs, and adaptation for the writers individual purposes.

The Gospel of John:

His purpose was to induce faith in Jesus Christ.
And to show that Christ is the Son of God.

What do the Gospels tell us?
They give us a full understanding that Jesus was 100% human. You can see in various examples that Jesus breathed, he needed to eat and drink. He also needed to sleep, and he bled at the cross.
So why is knowing that Jesus was 100% human so important?
If we do not understand that Jesus is human, we do not understand what he did for us on the cross. For he can only be a propitiation and a substitution for our sins if he was human. For he lived, died and rose again.

I am sorry if the information I'd just given is so scattered. But this was all I remember that helped me to understand the 4Gospels better.
